How to Add Twitter Emoji to Tweets or Bio on Desktop

This week’s #SocialMediaMinute will cover how to add Twitter emoji or emoticons to your tweets or Twitter bio while on a desktop.

Now, if you’re using a mobile device you’re probably already familiar with how to add Twitter emoji. (Btw, emoji are the smily faces, icons, shapes, and symbols you see in Twitter bios or status updates.) 😉

Unfortunately, if you’re using Twitter’s web app on your desktop or laptop it’s not at all intuitive.

Well allow me to introduce! I don’t know how else Twitter thought its users would know how to do this without instructions…but no biggy! That’s what I’m here for!

Adding Emoji To Tweets:

For Mac Users: If you’re using a Mac like me first make sure you have the latest version of the operating system installed as you’ll automatically have Twitter emoji support built in.

To add Twitter emoji, simply create a new tweet and hit COMMAND + CONTROL + SPACE together.

You’ll then see a convenient listing of all possible emoji twitter supports like:

  • People
  • Nature
  • Places
  • Objects
  • Symbols

Another cool feature is that Twitter will save all of your recently or most frequently used emoticons for easy access the next time you want to add them to your Tweets.

For PC Users: You have two options here, depending on which browser you use.  If you’re using chrome access the Chrome Web store and install the free Chromoji plug-in, which will let you view, copy and paste Mac-style emoji easily.

But who really want’s to copy and paste!? Big womp-womp for PC users :/

For other browsers, you do have the option to connect connect your Twitter to an app like iemoji.com, which will let you tweet whatever characters you want. However, the app will also auto append a annoying link at the end of your tweets. So I’m not at all recommending it, just giving you the option.

Bonus: Adding Emoji to Twitter Bio

Now here’s a really cool tip! You can also add emoticons to your Twitter bio. Just edit your profile description as you would regularly and then use the same keystroke COMMAND + CONTROL + SPACE and you will see the same pop-up box appear with numerous Twitter emoticon choices.

Takeaway

There are literally hundreds of Twitter emoji to choose from but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should be including them in each and every tweet. Emoji can be overused! My recommendation is to only include them in relevant updates as added flare.

Holidays are a perfect example of when to use Twitter emoticons and I am going to start using what looks like a video play arrow when tweeting about my latest #socialmediaminute.

You’ll also notice I’ve added two Twitter emoji to my bio!

What are some other ways to use Twitter emoji that I missed? How else can you use this feature to your advantage? Let me know in the comments below and make sure to come back next week for more social media tutorials.
